The fall 2024 edition of TCU Magazine puts the range of the TCU experience on full display – from using education as a
springboard for leadership to how the arts enrich campus to the important role of
TCU’s top-notch athletics, the subject of the newest edition’s cover story.
“When the Southwest Conference dissolved in the 1990s, the Horned Frog community was stunned by the loss of our seven-decade home for intercollegiate athletics,” said editor Caroline Collier. “It’s almost impossible to imagine now, but there was serious contemplation of abandoning Division I competition altogether.”
John V. Roach ’61 (MBA ’65), chair of the TCU Board of Trustees at the time, envisioned a different future for TCU — a future that included elite athletics.
“His creation of the Committee of 100 ignited a movement that
transformed the university. The committee grew to over 400 passionate supporters who
rallied the community behind Horned Frog sports,” Collier said. “Our fall cover story
explores the subsequent rise of TCU athletics, which is unparalleled among U.S. universities. Within
two decades, the Horned Frog teams evolved from relics to royals, and this is the
first time we have taken a step back to marvel at this stunning journey.”
Other stories from the fall 2024 issue include:
- A profile of Newy Scruggs ’23 EMBA, the NBC 5 sportscaster who revitalized his career through a graduate degree at TCU Neeley.
- A deep dive into the youth advocacy and educational studies major in the College of Education. Through this innovative program, TCU students are building the success of future generations, but outside of traditional classroom roles.
- A sampling of the permanent art collection around campus. From Andy Warhol to J. NiCole Hatfield (Nahmi-A-Piah), TCU’s buildings often double as museums for an array of art — including pieces from Rembrandt and Dürer.
- A profile on Richard Georges ’04. He was a hip-hop artist as a TCU student and now is poet laureate of the British Virgin Islands, as well as president of the college where his journey through higher education began.
